Workplace boundaries

Is it normal for my boss to message me after work?

An occasional message is common. An expectation that you are always available is a boundary problem—especially when urgency is vague, frequent, or unpaid.

Short answer: The message itself matters less than the expectation attached to it. You should know what counts as urgent, whether a reply is required, and how after-hours work is recognized.

Three signs it has crossed the line

  • You are expected to answer quickly even when you are not on call.
  • Routine work is regularly labelled urgent because planning happened too late.
  • Not replying affects how your commitment or performance is judged.

What to do first

  1. Record the date, time, topic and expected response for two weeks.
  2. Separate genuine emergencies from work that can wait until tomorrow.
  3. Ask for a clear team rule instead of debating one isolated message.

A calm way to say it

“Could we clarify the expectation for messages outside working hours? Unless something is marked urgent, I’ll pick it up the next working day so I can protect focus and recovery time.”

Is this the only problem—or part of a pattern?
