Recognition & career

I’m doing work above my job title. What should I do?

Stretch work can help a career when it is temporary, visible and connected to a review. It becomes exploitation when the responsibility grows indefinitely while authority, pay and support stay the same.

Do not argue from effort alone. Show how your current scope differs from the role you accepted, the outcomes you now own, and the level at which the company already relies on you.

Build a one-page case

  • Your original responsibilities versus what you now own.
  • Three to five outcomes with numbers, dates or stakeholder feedback.
  • Decisions, risks or people you now lead without formal authority.
  • The specific adjustment you want: title, pay, reduced scope or support.

Ask for a decision path

A vague promise is not a plan. Ask who approves the change, what evidence is required and the date when a decision will be made. Follow up in writing.

A calm way to say it

“My scope now includes responsibilities beyond the role I was hired for. I’ve summarized the outcomes and added responsibilities. I’d like to discuss aligning the title and compensation, or adjusting the scope if that is not possible.”
